We are dedicated to equipping all teachers with tools they need to improve literacy. As a statewide organization, we offer opportunities for professional growth through our annual conference and ongoing professional development events throughout the year.
Each year, we have the privilege of hosting our annual conference, where educators come together to learn with dynamic speakers and authors, and to enjoy countless opportunities for networking. Scholarships are awarded to high school students, as well as undergraduate and graduate level educators.
PSLA recognizes impactful classroom teachers, administrators, and exemplary schools through our numerous awards.

- Encourage the study of literacy instruction at all educational levels throughout South Carolina.
- Study the various factors that influence progress in literacy.
- Disseminate to local councils' knowledge regarding trends, research, and new developments in the teaching of literacy.
- Promote research in developmental, creative, corrective, and accelerated literacy.
- Assist in the professional development for South Carolina educators.
- Promote mutual understanding and cooperative work among educators of PreK - Higher Education.
- Sponsor the organization of new councils.
- Sponsor an annual literacy conference supported by the local councils, with an emphasis on best practices in the teaching of literacy across the curriculum.
The primary commitment is to promote literacy through the improvement of reading, writing, and communication instruction and to encourage literacy as a lifetime tool for learning.
